August 1998 New Thinking

Two sides of communities
August 31, 1998: I’ve spent the last week or so driving around the North of Ireland. First in Donegal and then in Derry, Antrim, Armagh, Tyrone. For those of you unaware of Irish geography, the latter four counties are in Northern Ireland. More

The myth of the individual
August 24, 1998: A few months ago I was at a very high powered meeting with some very high-powered people. People who ran some of the most powerful companies in the world. People who you would regard as being very individual. More

Physical space and cyberspace
August 17, 1998: The best way I have found to understand the Internet and how it behaves is to think of it as a ‘space.’ All spaces and things require a name so that we can have a handle for them. Perhaps there is no better name for Internet space than ‘cyberspace,’ the name coined by science fiction novelist, William Gibson, in his 1994 novel, Neuromancer. More

The right to copy
August 10, 1998: One of the first known copyright infringements occurred in Sixth Century Ireland. St. Columba created a copy of the Latin Psalter unknown to its owner, Finnian of Druim Finn. Finnian was not impressed and brought Columba to the king who ruled that, "As the calf belongs to the cow, so the copy belongs to its book." More

What is information?
August 03, 1998: I think it would be a common view to see information as a type of commodity or resource, as something solid, something identifiable. If information is a resource or commodity then it certainly does not have the same characteristics as traditional resources and commodities. More

Content management seminar feedback
"Gerry's presentation was very well received by the more than 400 higher education delegates. I've chaired this meeting since 1994 and very few speakers have generated the same level of enthusiasm. Wit and wisdom is always an unbeatable combination."
Bob Johnson, American Marketing Association

“Excellent presenter ... thought-provoking and relevant. I hope we can persuade him to visit us again one day.”
Malcolm Davison
The British Association of Communicators in Business

"Hearing Gerry McGovern speaking, one can feel that he truly masters the subject of content management. He was voted ‘best speaker of the conference’ by delegates."
Toon Lowette
European Association of Directory Publishers
